Spicy Korean Bulgogi

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new area, whether it be another city or country, is check out the grocery store. There is always so much to learn! This passion really came to fruition when a friend of mine, David A. Williams, came to town for a photography conference, and took me to a few Asian markets and introduced me to a few foods I had never tried before. And this was in my own neighborhood!

One of these delights was "bulgogi" (Korean for "fire meat"). It's usually made with really nice cuts of meat prepared with a sweet and savory sauce, consisting of soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar.

This is a really easy take on bulgogi, using ground pork and/or beef, and it can be used over rice, or in lettuce wraps. The flavor is absolutely amazing!

Servings 5

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp peanut oil
  • 1/2 onion chopped fine
  • 2 green onions chopped
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame oil

Sauce

  • 3 tbsp red chili flakes
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat oil to medium heat. Add onions and cook just until translucent.

  2. Add pork, ginger, and a little salt. Cook until pork is done. Add sesame oil.

  3. Mix sauce ingredients together. Cook for about 3 minutes, or until most of liquid has been evaporated.

  4. Serve over rice or as filling in lettuce wraps.
